I Kingma State

The estate on old maps

As far as is known, the first map of Friesland that shows Kingma State, east of Franeker, is ‘Frisia Occidentalis’ by Adrianus Metius and Pier Winsemius of 1622. That map was often copied. The best-known version is in Joan Blaeu’s ‘Atlas Maior’, a cartographic masterpiece published in Amsterdam in 1662 and 1665. More accurate is the map of the grietenij (district) of Franekeradeel by Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa, dated 1693 on the map itself and published in his atlas of 1698: it shows the state, the tollhouse, Kingmatille and the other large houses of Zweins.

Zweins in 1700

Who owned and used the farms around Zweins in 1700 is recorded in that year’s floreenkohier, a tax register. The Prekadastrale Atlas fan Fryslân (Fryske Akademy, 1990) lists these data, together with the cadastral parcels of 1832 on which each farm lay. The map below was drawn from those data. At that time the Kingma family owned Kingma State, Rinnerda State, a farm by Kingmatille, the brickworks and the smallholding Bervert in Zweins.
