Life story in brief

Julius Matthijs van Beijma thoe Kingma was the eldest son of the Frisian patriot Coert Lambertus van Beijma and spent years in exile in France as a child. He became a tax collector (ontvanger) in Workum and in 1806 married Agatha Wilhelmina van Voss; they had seven children, three of whom died young. In 1821 he was given permission to add the additional name thoe Kingma to his name. In 1825 he succeeded his uncle as grietman of Franekeradeel and as occupant of Kingma State; he remained both until his death. He sat in the Provincial States, was co-founder and first chairman of the Friesch Genootschap in 1827, and in 1842 was recognised as a member of the nobility with the title of jonkheer. In 1832 he owned the state, the brickworks, almost all the houses of Kingmatille, nine houses in Franeker and much land around Zweins. He died at the state in 1847. His youngest son had Kingma State sold in 1864, and the house was demolished that same year.
